"OYE COMO VA", are blogs written by our interns, offering a unique, behind-the-scenes look at and research inspired by their experiences working at ¡OYE! Group. Through their voices, you'll gain insight into the heart of our organization and learn about all of the work we do.

Each post will focus on one of these key areas, with interns sharing their personal stories,, lessons, creative discoveries and research on a topic they found in the work we do.

What you can expect:

  • Spotlights work we do: Each blog post will dive into one of our core pillars, providing a deep dive into how we use art to foster creativity, education, and well-being in the Black and Latine communities. Interns will share what it’s like to work on projects related to:

  • Theatre: From rehearsals to live performances, interns will share their experiences working on theatre productions.

  • Art Education: Learn how our interns help deliver workshops for youth, adults, and seniors and the importance of art education in empowering and inspiring our community.

  • Mental Health: Discover how our organization integrates mental health awareness into our art programs, creating a safe, supportive space for artists to explore and express their emotional and mental well-being.

  • Multidisciplinary Productions: Interns will share their experience working on collaborative projects that blend visual art, performance, and technology, reflecting the innovative spirit of our community.

  • Community Engagement: Get a glimpse into how our interns help organize and participate in festivals or events that build connections between artists, families, and the community, and the powerful impact of public art projects and festivals.

  • Personal Reflections: Interns will open up about their journeys in the arts, the skills they've gained, and how working with our organization has impacted their personal and professional growth.

  • Behind-the-Scenes Looks: Whether it's helping organize an exhibition, supporting a community event, or assisting in an art workshop, interns will provide insider views on what it takes to bring our programs to life.

  • New Research: Our current productions focus on certain topics that are constantly evolving and being researched (such as virtual reality and mental health) so be prepared to read about new information and research on those topics!

CURRENT BLOG

Monica Thompson is a current second-year student studying at UCLA. She is pursuing a degree in Political Science and minoring in Professional Writing. Earlier this year, she interned with us when we partnered with the Professional Writing class at UCLA to have them experience hands-on work in the nonprofit sector! Through what is commonly referred to as experiential or community-engaged learning, they developed skills and explored many interests with us. Monica's interests led to her creating blogs for you all to dive deeper into topics that we feel passionate about and contribute to our mission of sparking dialogue and social change through art and education.

We are thankful to Amber West, a member of our board, for making this partnership possible and we hope you all enjoy The Artful Impact, our new monthly blogs!
