Job Title: Fresh Start Instructor
Job Type: Freelance/Contract
Job Timeline:
8 to 12 weeks per session.
One class per week.
The Fresh Start program happens seasonally with a new program session happening every 8 to 12 weeks, depending on facility and funding.
Oye Group is seeking teaching artists on a rolling basis for our Fresh Start Program. (You can apply for this and future sessions to be added to our list of possible teachers.)
This job is perfect for teachers/artists/instructors/facilitators who are looking for seasonal gig work with the possibility of continuing with the program after each session.
Job Responsibilities:
Teach/facilitate class sessions.
Write the class curriculum for each session with the Artistic Director.
Collaborate with other instructors on curriculum and co-leading classes.
Work with the students to create a supportive and empowering space.
Maintain a positive and constructive attitude toward the production, process and all tasks involved.
Be patient with the collaboration and OYE Group company process.
Maintain an open line of communication with all members of OYE Group through emails and filling out weekly feedback forms.
Communicate updates, changes, additions, subtracts—generally in production meetings.
Address all production problems, concerns, etc. through the producing director immediately.
Job Transportation:
This job requires weekly travel of 1-2 hours to and from the facility for the class once a week (to either Long Island or upstate NY) by either driving (rental car or personal car) or taking the train.
If needed, OYE Group will cover train tickets to upstate, car rental and/or gas reimbursement if driving to the facility with your own vehicle.
Preferred Skills:
Experience working in a detention facility environment
Experience with teaching arts education
Experience working with teenagers
Experience working with incarcerated individuals
Experience working with communities of color
Experience working with lower income communities
Passion for youth empowerment
Able to handle conflict resolution with youth comfortably
Driver’s License (not needed but a bonus)
Overall Communication:
Oye Group will provide administrative and transportation support.
Instructors communicate with each other every week to plan classes and coordinate travel.
Instructors send weekly reports to OYE Group staff with notes/feedback.
