¡OYE! For My Dear Brooklyn

An autobiographical and uncompromising collection of poetry by writer and actor Modesto Flako Jimenez, Oye Para mi Querido Brooklyn (Listen For My Dear Brooklyn). Hiding out in his abuelita’s bathroom, Flako, a young Dominican man, escapes into the memories of losing his culture and self to the gentrified blocks of Bushwick, Brooklyn. While dancing in the arts trying to find safe space. Flako takes us on a journey from his first steps in America to him being a 35 year old artist of color searching for acceptance and freedom in a landscape that tells him to question everything he does, cause around the corner ignorance lives in the Americas. From losing his first acting role to the blonde hair blue eye kid beacuse of a latino accent to embracing that he must help the youth in his community so they don’t end up going through the discriminations he has gone through.

Oye For My Dear Brooklyn is performed in both English and Spanish through a series of poems, video projections and music. Lyrical and savage, Flako’s poetry is populated with immigrants, drug dealers, condoritos, tiguerasos, mothers and sons, all asking the same question, “What’s my moral worth?”
