WAMOO: 2023-2024 ARTIST IN RESIDENCE

Every year ¡Oye Group! provides a fellowship opportunity for one or two artists to dig in and develop new and exciting work. The course of the fellowship is theirs to decide while ¡Oye! Group supports the artist by providing the following:

  • Financial support

  • Rehearsal space for the writing/development of one work

  • Administrative and production support

  • Meetings with the ¡Oye! Group’s Artistic Director to provide guidance, advice, or any other support the artist feels necessary.

We are excited to announce WAMOO real name Juan Álvarez, as one of our Artists In Residence for our 2023-2024 season.

TRANQUILO GALLERY AND EXPERIENCE

Tranquilo is WAMOO’s latest audio, visual album, and short film, which draws from his childhood with video games. It has been displayed in the Brooklyn Museum and Lightbox in New York City and the Magic Box at The Reef in Los Angeles. Obsidian: Literature & Arts in the African Diaspora and Apricity Magazine have also featured WAMOO's works. The Tranquilo short film has been selected to be in the Chroma Arts Film Festival in Miami under the Cinematic Poetry Category.

Through his residence with ¡OYE! Group and in partnership with DigiAna, WAMOO will build on this project and develop a gallery and musical performances.

Tranquilo: A Semi-Autobiographical Gallery and Experience tell the coming-of-age story of Wamoo (Juan Alvarez), a Dominican immigrant in the United States. As a pre-teen, Wamoo encountered various obstacles when he relocated to Washington Heights. Apart from a language barrier, he had difficulty forming relationships with the local Dominican-American children who had already established themselves in the community. Integrating music, theater, and video, Tranquilo explores the hilarious cultural misunderstandings and the somber realities of isolation and loneliness. The exhibition will take audiences on a life journey with a digital-collage twist; both tech and live elements are used to tell the story with its seams exposed. The visual aesthetics are linked to video games, creating a nostalgic thread between the younger and the present Wamoo. The music is heavily influenced by hip-hop, reggaeton, and ambient electronic music. The final non-traditional musical performances will be performed by a small ensemble cast.

Meet the Artist

WAMOO and Seungjin Lee, Founder and Organizer of DigiAna Group, working on Tranquilo.

WAMOO, real name Juan Álvarez, is a Dominican-American video artist and musician, who believes there's no such thing as bad art. Born in the Dominican Republic and based in New York City's Washington Heights, the well-rounded musician and video artist strives to create universes in which sonic and visual art can coexist. His approach to music is akin to collage-making. He has an omnivorous set of influences, including southern hip-hop, shoegazing, and commercial jingles. His visual style is a futuristic and transnational version of pop art, taking influences from all regions of the world.

Creating with a holistic mindset comes naturally to Wamoo. His sonic and visual perceptions are made to be displayed in both museums and music spaces, creating an enveloping experience for everyone who comes across it.

His most popular works include; "Hello, Hello", "My Cat is Scared of My Timbs", "Harlem (Whole Foods)", and "Caracol Caracol.
